Volunteer Shifts

The Zimbabwean Music Festival is made possible through the charitable contributions of time and stewardship of many generous volunteers. This page lists all of the volunteer shifts at the festival this year. The shifts are organized into task groups. You may jump to a particular gropu by selecting one of the group links below.

Some volunteer shift are restricted. Please refer to these guidelines and sign up accordingly.

Registration

workshop computer assist
(General)
This person will check that workshop evaluations have been put out for teachers and make sure they are picked up for all workshops every session. If not, they will take them to the workshops.
Computer Assist
(General)
This person assists people who need to register for workshops, buy concert tickets or signup for volunteer jobs. Must be friendly, organized and have good people skills.
Festival Checkin
(General)
This person welcomes everyone at the registration desk, gives them their packet (if there are no changes or questions) and makes sure they are signed up for a volunteer job.

Workshops
Group Shifts: Show Hide

Workshop Needs
(General)
This person will work with the Teachers/Workshops Coordinator to move mbiras and drums and/or any other requested equipment to workshops before each workshop. They will also help to set up the marimba classrooms each morning (if needed, uncover marimbas and put out mallets and hosho) and close up marimba classrooms after the last workshop each day (cover marimbas, lock up mallets and hosho as needed). This person will also let students into locked buildings for their workshops.
Workshop Instrument Mover
(General)
This person will help move instruments from vehicles to classrooms for set-up on Wednesday and Thursday. This person will also help move instruments from classrooms back into vehicles for takedown on Sunday and Monday morning. Must be physically able to manage large and bulky instruments.

Afternoon Stage

Afternoon stagehand
(General)
This person moves instruments (mostly marimbas) to and from the afternoon stage. The moving can be to and from vehicles or classrooms - other people doing this will be performers. This person also helps the afternoon stage manager with any set-up or break-down tasks.
Green Tent Staff
(General)
This person supports the musicians performing at the afternoon stage by providing water and assisting with stage set-up when needed. This person may also be asked to help move instruments between sets.

Evening Stage

Evening stagehand
(General)
This person moves instruments (mostly marimbas) to the back of the evening stage prior to the concert. This person also assists in moving instruments between sets during the evening concert. After the concert is over, this person helps to move instruments back to vehicles, classrooms or backstage.
Evening Green Room
(General)
This person will assist the Green Room Coordinator with bringing food/beverages into the room and helping to keep the room cleaned up during and after the concert. This person will also assist getting any left-over food/beverages moved to the Mbira Gathering after the concert.
Evening Zimfest Table
(General)
This person will be responsible for selling Zimfest t-shirts and posters. An accounting sheet must be kept detailing all sales and money received, and money will be kept in the cash box and secured at all times. This person will also help with the job of Door and Tickets when necessary.
Evening stage security
(General)
This person will control all doors into the auditorium and backstage for the evening concerts. No one will be allowed in the back stage area without a pass.
Door and Tickets
(General)
This person will collect all tickets for people going into the evening concerts. This person will also sell tickets to those who do not have them. An accounting sheet must be kept showing all tickets sold and prices charged and money must be kept in the cash box and secured at all times. This person will also distribute Will Call tickets for the MOKOOMBA concert on Thursday night.

Marketplace

Marketplace Zimfest Booth
(General)
This person will help sell Zimfest t-shirts, posters and cold drinks at the Zimfest Booth. An accounting sheet must be kept detailing all sales and money received, and money will be kept in the cash box and secured at all times.
Marketplace takedown
(General)
This person will assist vendors each afternoon in taking down their booth and moving their goods into the locked storage area. Must be able to help move large or heavy objects.
Marketplace storage
(General)
This person will assist vendors who arrive on Thursday to put their goods into the locked storage area. Must be able to help move large or heavy objects.
Marketplace setup
(General)
This person will assist vendors with setting up their booths in the morning (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Must be able to help move large or heavy objects.

Misc
Group Shifts: Show Hide

General set up and clean up
(General)
This person will be available to do any jobs that haven't been covered to help set up for the beginning of the festival on Thursday. This person will also help with general clean-up after the festival ends on Monday morning.
Evening concert decorations
(General)
This person will help set up decorations for the evening concerts Thursday through Sunday. This person will also help to take down the decorations at the end of the concert on Sunday night.
Marketplace Decoration set up and take down
(General)
This person will help put together the decorative banners and place them around the marketplace Friday morning. They will take them down Sunday afternoon.
Signage Set Up and Clean Up
(General)
This person helps to put together and place directional posters and signs around campus on Thursday (for set up) and takes down all signs on Monday morning.
