Michael Sibanda

Michael Sibanda is a world-touring African marimba composer, arranger, performer and music educator based at St Stithians College in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a Music teaching diploma from Kwanongoma College of Music, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and a Masters Degree (Music Education) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Michael is currently the Director of the Maru a Pula Marimba Band having taken over from his mentor the late Dr Alport Mhlanga. Michael has more than 28 years of professional experiences in training and mentoring marimba ensemble groups in schools, colleges, community centres and festivals and music camps worldwide. He introduced the marimba at St Stithians College, bringing together a diverse culture through ensemble marimba playing. The St Stithians Boys' Preparatory marimba band has graced some of the world's stages and performed for, and alongside, some world renowned performers. Michael has performed at festivals around the world including Zimfest 2005 in Bellingham, Washington. Michael keeps his students enthused and excited about marimba music by constantly composing and arranging new music for his bands from different genres. Outside of music, Michael is a keen sportsman who plays an odd game of basketball and watches soccer matches from different leagues around the world. He is married and has three children.
