June 27-30 — Pacific Lutheran University — Tacoma, WA
Jeff Brahe is of the rare breed of musician that grew up in the USA, yet has played Shona music since childhood. Originally hailing from Santa Fe, NM, he came to Tacoma for college in 2006 and has lived in the Northwest ever since. A leading member of The Andé Marimba Band, he has performed and toured nationally, and has been truly humbled to work with many outstanding musicians from the US and Africa. His musical background includes years of African music, as well as a bachelor's degree in composition and studies in bass clarinet, conducting, and piano. Since 2009, he has been involved in teaching workshops nationwide, and was recently a featured guest clinician at Seattle's EMP Museum. In addition to marimba, mbira, and hosho, he has become an avid student of matepe, drumming, and njari. As a composer and performer, he strives to find innovative new ways to express himself through music, and as a teacher he seeks to preserve the ancient traditions of African music as purely as possible.
